The Boiling Test in Porcelain Insulator Standards
IEC 60383-1 specifies the boiling test as a sample test for porcelain insulators. The insulator is immersed in boiling water for a specified duration then immediately subjected to a thermal shock (immersion in cold water) or electrical test. This verifies that the porcelain body does not absorb water — a sign of insufficient vitrification or micro-cracks in the glaze.
